Whether short or long-term, staff absence hits companies hard. But why should you be bothered about it and how do you go about managing it?
It is commonly acknowledged that sickness absence is a huge issue for all employers - organising sick pay, arranging cover, reorganising workloads and dealing with the employee on sickness absence can all eat into your company's productivity and time, which as a result adds significant costs to UK businesses each year. According to Price Waterhouse Cooper it’s sickness absence that accounts for around 90% of UK companies’ absence bill, coming in at a massive £29 billion a year. Most employers however are uncertain about how to handle employee absence, mitigate its impact on their business effectively and avoid the risk of claims.
Morgan McKinley’s HR division recently held a Legal Seminar on Sickness Absence for their clients in the Sussex market to help local businesses discover the best way to manage sickness absences within their teams and worked in conjunction with Morrisons Solicitors LLP to offer insight into this topic.
The seminar was a great success which incorporated a good balance of theory based information and a practical session where clients broke off into small groups and were given two case studies to look into and discuss in great detail.
The seminar concluded with the top ten tips on managing sickness absence and we would like to share them with you:
