The different sector and career directions for newly qualified accountants to consider

Kathryn Swan 23.04.2020

Many people who have recently qualified, or are thinking about their career route beyond qualification, will be taking time to consider their options in terms of sectors and the different career paths available.

Career advice for Newly Qualified Accountants

Public Practice, Financial Services, Commerce & Industry or Tax? There are a number of different newly qualified accountant jobs available.

At Morgan McKinley we host events specifically targeted at Newly Qualified Accountants, and our Life After Qualification series has given qualified accountants the opportunity to hear from guest speakers who work in a variety of roles across a range of industries.

After qualification, the newly qualified accountant jobs available are diverse. But not everyone knows which direction they want their career to head. Our events provided an insight into the different routes that can be taken and the newly qualified accountant or audit & advisory jobs available.

Public Practice, Financial Services, Commerce & Industry or Tax?

Public practice offers challenging and rewarding work, with the opportunity to specialise your skill set, and develop your client and staff management skills. If you have qualified outside the Big Four, then adding one to your CV now can unlock a world of possibility within larger corporate organisations, and equally smaller firms offer considerable advisory jobs to specialise in both client work and projects.

Public Practice salary guide

A career in banking brings with it attractive salaries and challenging environments for newly qualified accountants. Offering the opportunity to work alongside some of the best technical experts, the sector provides the infrastructure for career progression and mobility.

Commerce & Industry is attractive as it offers the possibility of being at the heart of a business, maximising its commercial performance. This career path presents the chance to gain valuable commercial skills and work within multidisciplinary teams.

Candidates have plenty of opportunity to specialise further within tax, either through progression within professional services, or a move into a commercial in-house role within financial services or Commerce & Industry.
