Here are five tips to help you change jobs in 2017:

1)  Be prepared 

Before committing yourself to the idea of making a move, it is important to reflect on your existing skills and experience and ask yourself whether you have developed enough in your current position to find a new one. 

2) Improve your Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) 

If you decide it is the right time to make a move then it is important to ensure your personal brand is appropriate for your job search. 

A good place to start is typing your name into Google and seeing what comes up. Take a closer look at your LinkedIn profile and any additional social media accounts such as Facebook. Another key tip is to identify keywords which link to your industry and then incorporate these into your profile descriptions. 

3) Know your long term career goals

When looking to change jobs, it is very important to have a clear vision for your long term career. To achieve this, focus on what you enjoy, the type of work you find rewarding and try to understand what drives your motivation. Be sure to make the decision to move based on more than the simple desire for a higher salary  

Consider whether the current role will help you reach your overall goals, and if not then by paying attention to your drivers, you will be drawn to opportunities that will take you in the right direction to reach your long term career objectives.  

4) Always network 

In today’s society who you know is as important as what you know. Be sure to continuously talk to people about your long term goals because you never know what conversations you will spark. It is important to be prepared for such occasions; keep some business cards handy and be prepared to talk about your background and the direction you want to take your career in. 

5) Keep your search to yourself 

Searching for a job while you are currently employed is both time consuming and risky. It is important to protect the security of your current job and therefore it is recommended to keep your career search quiet. 

The most important thing is to have a new job lined up before handing your notice into your boss.
