4 top tips to set yourself up for a successful year

Here are a few top tips on how to give yourself best possible start to a successful 2019...

1. Establish your goals, and write them down!

“A goal without a plan is just a wish” - Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.

Do not leave it until January to consider what you want to achieve at work next year. Use your annual appraisals and feedback to plan ahead. Set time aside in your diary over Christmas to dedicate to reflecting on the past year and decide on what you want to achieve going forward. More importantly, write down your objectives! According to Forbes (2018), people who vividly describe their goals are 1.2-1.4 times more likely to successfully accomplish their goals. Setting goals is paramount to a successful career, however, make sure they are achievable, and make a point of reviewing them on a monthly or quarterly basis throughout the year to track progress. Another tip is to commit to your goals by saying them out loud, tell your Manager or Mentor so that you hold yourself accountable.

2. Fill your diary

Kick start your year and mitigate the risk of ‘January blues’ by spending time now filling up your diary for the first few months of next year. Fill your schedule with meetings, pre-book gym classes, sign up to industry events or training seminars to minimise the blues and start your year as you mean to go on.

3. Declutter your desk

A messy work environment can lead to a chaotic mind which can hold you back and slow you down at work. Take ten minutes to declutter your desk to clear your mind for the New Year ahead. But do not stop there - you are not going to see the true benefits if you do it as one off, keep on top of it and diarise a monthly desk clean-up to help you stay on track. You will likely find it should not take you as long each time to tidy up which is testament to the fact you are more on top of things!

4. Network!

Reflecting on the past year, how successful have you been with keeping in touch with people in your industry and expanding your network? An easy place to start is ensuring your LinkedIn profile is up to date. Use LinkedIn to connect with old and new industry contacts, invite them for a coffee and a catch up - you never know how this might impact your career now or in the future.

Finally, get back in touch with your trusted career mentor or recruiter if you are open to discussing your future. We’re always here to help advise you and would be delighted to share future opportunities with you.
