How many times have you thought about moving abroad? Have you ever stayed up at night and thought: ‘What if?’
Many people dream of working abroad, but lack the conviction to actually do it. I was in the same situation before I moved to the UK in 2014, but on reflection, it was one of the best decisions of my life.
Growing up in Brazil meant that many things in the UK seemed unfamiliar and unusual to me, but over the past few years I have been able to adapt and it has been one of the most enriching and rewarding experiences of my life. Hopefully sharing my experience with you will give you the courage to take the plunge.
Below I outline my top 4 reasons on why you should work abroad:
Navigating your way around an unfamiliar city, getting used to a new working culture, chatting to colleagues in another language – these are all challenges you might face if you decide to live abroad. Mastering these challenges will not only impress future employers, but it will also give you the opportunity to develop as a person.
Spending time away from home means you will meet lots of people from different cultures and countries. This can be a real eye opener as you will see many different lifestyles and you will gain a real appreciation that there is more than one way to live a life. It’s vital to understand different cultures, different ways of working and being able to work with people from all over the globe. In our modern world, the need for diversity in the workplace isn’t just desirable, it’s necessary if companies want to succeed in the long run.
Smile at people, interact with the locals and your colleagues, ask questions and make friends! You will be surprised how much you will learn in a short space of time; whether it’s the language or new ways of working. In some instances you will build lifelong relationships and who knows, it might lead you to your next exciting opportunity.
Moving abroad is widely seen as a positive by all future employers as it shows flexibility, adaptability and a desire for self-development; all are attractive traits to possess. Pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone when working abroad will enable you to achieve more than you ever imagined.
Rather than dreaming about living abroad, why not make this the year you head overseas and experience something new? Let 2018 be the year that you chase your dreams.
