We understand the need for contractors to have as much certainty and control over their current assignment as possible. Where this isn't possible, the relationship with their agency to consider is vital to help know “what's next & when”.
There is a myth amongst contractors that if you want to secure your next role whilst you are still working, you should probably talk to another recruiter. This is not necessary!
Our role as your recruiter is to ensure you are working - that could be in your current assignment but even if your role is coming to an end or is not working out the way you had expected, we want to help you find your next position.
The first key point is to use your recruiter to gather more information about your current assignment…is it likely to be extended? Is there anything we can do to improve the environment, workload, project or relationship with the client? If none of these are possible, then it is definitely time to talk to your recruitment consultant about restarting your job search.
There are multiple benefits of using your current agency:
All of these will hopefully speed up how quickly and smoothly you will secure your next and future contracts.
The foundation of any relationship is honesty, so the first bit of advice I would suggest is to let your recruiter know what you want, what you like and what's most important in your job search. The more we know and understand about your motivators, the better chance we have of finding you the perfect role! It's OK to say no…if it's too far, not the right role or salary - just tell us.
Another key point is to meet with your agency/recruiter. Now, I appreciate that your time is precious, especially when looking for work when you are in a current assignment, and if you met your current agency a few years ago it may feel like an onerous task however if it’s a new consultant or perhaps it's just been a while, we will still want to meet you again. It's not an administrative task, it is genuinely because we want to understand you and your search as much as possible! And, if the last few months have taught us anything, it is that you can use technology to “meet” conveniently from your home or office.
It is so important to consider the current situation when looking for your next assignment, at any time but especially at the moment!
Speak to your consultant about current market conditions, how have they affected job numbers in your field, what effect have they had on daily rates?
We will be speaking to a broad proportion of the market so will be able to give you an honest and balanced indicator of what you need to do to best stand out and when is it a good time to start looking for your next assignment.
We want you happy and working so we will always be honest with you - for example if we feel you would be in a better position holding in your current role for a little while or reviewing your current salary expectation we will say.
The most important thing though is to keep in touch with your recruiter - throughout your job search, whilst working and then again when you want to restart your job search! The more you speak to us about your specific requirements, as well as more general market conditions, the better placed we will be to be able to support you in securing your next role!
