Tax advice
If you would like tax advice about working in the UK contact Morgan McKinley. We can offer details about who to contact should you need expert guidance and tax advice about your tax obligations.
What you need before you start
Every employee in the UK is required to pay tax to the government on any salary that exceeds £6,475 per annum. Your tax payments will be deducted from your salary automatically by your employer, but there are elements that you must first establish to make this possible.
P45
When you leave a job in the UK, your employer will issue you with a P45 form. This form details your gross earnings, and tax paid during the year. A P45 also advises your future employer of your correct tax code and provides updated tax details to Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, who update your personal tax record accordingly.
P46
A P46 form is used by employees who do not have a P45.
National Insurance Number
Your National Insurance Number is used by UK employers to deduct tax and National Insurance contributions from your wages, and also entitles you to certain types of Social Security benefits. You can apply for a National Insurance Number at your local Job Centre Plus, and can find out more about doing so from the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP), http://www.dwp.gov.uk.
Contact details for tax officials in the UK
You can find out more information about your tax obligations by contacting HM Revenue and Customs, www.hmrc.gov.uk. Your specialist recruitment consultant at Morgan McKinley can also offer you tax advice, so don't hesitate to contact us.
How to claim a UK tax rebate
If you suspect that you've paid too much tax, contact your employer's tax office. They can offer advice about what documents you will require to claim a tax rebate and can guide you through the application process. Your employer will issue you with a P60 form at the end of every tax year (which runs 6 April to 5 April of the following year). This is yours to keep for your records. It details the tax contributions you have made and can be used to make a claim for a tax rebate.
For more information visit the HM Revenue and Customs website, www.hmrc.gov.uk, or contact your nearest office.
Setting up a bank account
Before you begin working in the UK you will require a British bank account. A bank account is the safest way to manage your money and most employers will expect you to have one into which they can pay your wages.
Any number of banks will be pleased to discuss your options with you. You will require identification and certain other documents when opening a UK bank account; typically a current, signed passport, evidence of your overseas address and a UK mailing address.
